A 27-year-old man convicted of drunk-driving at Galway District Court on Monday was disqualified for two years and fined €200 by Judge Denis McLoughlin.
Defence solicitor Valerie Corcoran told the court that Paul Taylor, of 27 Glenanail Drive, Riverside, Galway, who was apprehended at 3.30am on 24 December 2006 by Garda Mark A Caffrey, was “doing his best to put his life in order”. Mr Taylor had a breath alcohol level of twice the legal limit.

Mr Taylor, who had lost three family members in the year preceding the offence, had addiction problems which were exacerbated by the grief he suffered as a result of the deaths of his family members, said Ms Corcoran.

Now living in a Simon Community house, Mr Taylor, who plead guilty, was “doing his best to put his life in order”, the court heard.

Judge McLoughlin convicted Mr Taylor but imposed the minimum fine of €200, giving him three months to pay with seven days in default. He also disqualified Mr Taylor from driving for two years and one day. The additional charge of dangerous driving was reduced to careless driving and taken into account by the judge in making his decision.
