Galway theatre company Druid goes global today as it stages three different productions in three different countries. The Cripple of Inishmaan by Martin McDonagh is being staged at the Olympia Theatre as part of the Ulster Bank Dublin Theatre Festival; The Walworth Farce by Enda Walsh is being staged at the National Theatre, London; and The Playboy of the Western World and The Shadow of the Glen by J M Synge are being stage in the Roda Theatre, Berkeley, California. Commenting on Druid's achievements this year, Garry Hynes, Artistic Director said, "The planning and work involved in staging three productions at the same time is significant and demanding but the result is an incredible achievement for Druid and a historic day, which celebrates not only Druid but also Irish theatre. "To see three great Irish writers on the national and international stage is testament to our rich literary heritage." All three productions have been supported by Culture Ireland, the national agency established in 2005 by the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism to promote Irish arts worldwide. Culture Ireland CEO, Eugene Downes said it had been striking to see Druid's global reputation continuing to rise so strongly over the last year. "Culture Ireland is proud to partner Druid in their international touring and promotion, building on our shared commitment to bring world-class Irish theatre to international audiences," he said. Martin Cullen TD, Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism also praised Druid's achievements. "I congratulate Druid on their landmark day. The Druid success story continues with plays by J.M. Synge, Enda Walsh and Martin McDonagh on stage here at home, in the UK and in the US. It is a wonderful achievement for the company and for their casts and crews." |
