The calls formed part of 19,331 communications received from around the country last year, with €700,000 worth of financial aid distributed to those in need. The figures were released this week as the society kick-started their fundraising for this year with the launch of Daffodil Day.

Speaking ahead of the event at the Salthill Hotel on Monday morning, John McCormack of the Irish Cancer Society said they have set a fundraising target of €4 million for 2010.

"Everyone has been touched by cancer either directly or indirectly and, unfortunately, the cancer incidence is growing all the time. Latest data shows that 1,219 people were diagnosed with cancer in Galway in 2008 and this year we expect that there will be up to 30,000 new cases of cancer diagnosed across the country. Cancer will affect one in three people during the course of their lifetime, however, more people are surviving cancer due to more people being diagnosed at an earlier stage and advances in treatment."

Daffodil Day will take place across the country on Friday 26 March and volunteers are being sought to help out on the day.

Further information on becoming a volunteer is available from the Daffodil Day office on 1850-606060.
