A 26-year-old Loughrea man and a juvenile were both remanded in custody when they appeared before Galway District Court on Monday charged in connection with a stabbing incident in the town last weekend. Christy Maughan, 5 Gort Bridé, Loughrea, and a 17-year-old minor, who may not be named because of his age, were both charged with assaulting Michael Ward, causing him harm at Gort Bridé, Loughrea, on Sunday last, 29 June. Garda Tony Costello gave evidence of arresting and cautioning both accused last Sunday night when he executed outstanding bench warrants issued for the arrest of both men because of their failure to appear before Loughrea District Court on two occasions in the past few months. The court was told one of the Bench Warrants in existence for the juvenile's arrest had been issued by the Circuit Criminal Court recently. Defence solicitor, Sheena McCarthy said Maughan was under the long-term care of the psychiatric services and had been extremely agitated since his arrest. She said he had set fire to his cell while in custody on Sunday night and would need psychiatric treatment if remanded in custody. Inspector Mick Coppinger applied to the court to have both accused remanded in custody to appear before Harristown District Court this Friday. Judge Mary Fahy remanded both accused in custody to appear before Harristown District Court on Friday, 4 July. Maughan became agitated and verbally abusive towards his solicitor when told he was being remanded in custody. He had to be restrained by gardaí and prison officers outside the courtroom before being taken to the cells downstairs in the courthouse. |
