Galway County Council is unable to respond to flooding and maintenance problems on local roads, a Galway County Councillor has claimed.

Councillor Fidelma Healy Eames, the Galway West candidate for Fine Gael, said that the Galway County Council local office at Lackagh has been unable to cope with the level of flooding and road maintenance because of bad weather in December and January.

"The local engineer informed me that he had over 90 flooding problems to investigate by mid-January and already 60 reports of burst tyres have been received due to potholes in the local area," she said.

The Galway West candidate for Fine Geal said she understood the weather had "exacerbated the problem" but she found it "unacceptable that it has been taking six weeks to repair potholes in the Oranmore electoral area".

A Local resident in the Creganna area said, "In our house we pay over €3,000 in road tax per year and the road is sub-standard".

Councillor Healy Eames said emergency funding should be made available "to provide for extra manpower to get the basic work done".

"The local roads are the last to be done and it really is a poor service," she said.
