A report into the health of a beech tree in the North West corner of Eyre Square has lead to a decision to dismantle the tree today, Wednesday 19 December.

Personnel from the Parks Department have been monitoring the tree and recently observed a sharp decline in its health. Concern about the safety of the tree was heightened following the recent loss of a branch off the tree and an independent report was commissioned.

The independent report concluded that the tree is well into maturity and is in the later stages of the normal lifespan for a beech tree. It is in serious decline and will be completely dead within a relatively short time, possibly as early as spring 2008.

The report also highlighted the fact that the limbs of the tree reach out over a well-trafficked public pavement, and that the tree is traditionally . The structural condition of the tree is poor; the dead branches in the crown are liable to snap without warning and could potentially cause injury to members of the public passing by or sat beneath the tree.

As a result of the deteriorating condition of the tree along with the risk that the tree poses to the public, Galway City Council has decided to professionally dismantle the tree without delay on Wednesday 19th December 2007.

Pedestrian areas in the immediate area surrounding the tree will be restricted while the tree is being dismantled.

The timber from the Beech tree will be stored and it is hoped to put this timber to use in the future while another Beech tree will be planted in the original location in Eyre Square.
