Galway City Council has said that they will intervene in the row over noise pollution and vibrations in the Knocknacarra area of the city.

18niall brolchain.jpg The construction work underway at Bothar Stiofan has caused a lot of controversy in recent weeks with local councillors complaining about the impact on local residents.

Peter Sloane of the Bothar Stiofan Residents Association said that the disruption had gone on for long enough.

“There is a significant amount of development going on in this area over the last two years and that has resulted in very high noise levels, not only on Bothar Stiofan but also in adjacent estates. They start work at around 8am in the morning and the vibrations from the rock breakers on site are very disturbing for residents.

“There is also a pre-school on the road with children aged around three and four, and this is simply not acceptable. Overall, people are getting fed up with the amount of disruption and noise going on. They want this development to be finished as soon as possible, but at the same time, the situation cannot continue as it is. Some compromise must be sorted out,” he said.

Green Party Councillor Niall Ó Brolcháin has backed the residents, saying that some action be taken to improve the situation.

“While I am happy for a shopping centre, Dunnes Stores, to be built on this site, as it will provide a much needed facility for the people of Knocknacarra and hopefully lead to a reduction in traffic in other parts of the city, I do not accept that it is in anyway acceptable for children in a nearby crèche to be subjected to very loud noise and constant physical vibrations on a daily basis,” he said.

A spokesperson for the City Council said the council planned to enter talks with the developers to ensure a suitable compromise is met.

“We will investigate the concerns expressed in relation to the level of noise and vibrations from building works at the site of the new shopping centre adjacent to Bothar Stiofan and in doing so will take into consideration any relevant information in relation to the granting of the planning permission associated with this development. Galway City Council will be making contact with the developer in question early next week in relation to the concerns expressed,” a spokesperson said.
