Galway City Council engineers are to assess the need for a pedestrian crossing on a stretch of road that claimed the life of a Galway woman. City council engineers visited the stretch of road at the back of the Galway Hospice that claimed the life of an elderly Galway pedestrian last month. The move follows representations from Galway City Councillor Mary Leahy who reiterated the urgency of providing a pedestrian crossing. Officials have agreed to meet a deputation from the locality with Cllr Leahy to discuss the situation further and this meeting will take place in the coming days. Tragedy struck at the location on Sunday 23 September when a single-decker Bus ?ireann bus was in a collision with the woman at traffic lights near the junction of Renmore Road and the Dublin Road. Last month, Cllr Leahy called for a pedestrian crossing near the access to the back of the Galway Hospice. She has pointed out the increasing number of pedestrians crossing the Dublin Road to Renmore school, Galway Hospice, Renmore church, Kingfisher club and other services. "The traffic volume has mushroomed and the addition of a bus lane has meant that some buses and taxis, in having a clear run, are travelling at high speeds, further exacerbating the danger," explained Cllr Leahy. |
