Galway City Council has launched an investigation into unauthorised unloading of vehicles beside a complex built for the elderly in the city centre.

According to Councillor Catherine Connolly, difficulties have existed at Whitehall, situated behind the Eyre Square shopping centre, for some time in relation to unauthorised loading and unloading, which is blocking the street. It is also said to be the cause of serious noise pollution.

The Whitehall complex was specially constructed for elderly residents and residents with special needs. The parking allegedly continues for up to an hour and is also causing difficulties for emergency services like ambulances.

The council has since announced they are examining the implementation of a pedestrianised area on the road between Whitehall and the shopping centre.

"Obviously any changes will have to be in consultation with the residents and provision made for access for them whether through demountable bollards or otherwise. Given the long history to this matter and the vulnerability of the residents, I would hope that appropriate steps will be taken as soon as possible and I will be monitoring the situation," said Cllr Connolly.
