Galway County Council is to act on reducing the speed limit at Coldwood NS on the N6 Galway to Dublin Road, on foot of representations from local Senator, Fidelma Healy Eames.

The new limit, if implemented, will be 50km/h. The current limit is 80km/h.

Senator Healy Eames said she was delighted the county council had seen fit to move on this proposal.

"It is more than six years since I started to support the local community with their road safety campaign at Coldwood NS.

"For children and parents to have to turn right into Coldwood NS and, in so doing, cross the busy N6 for school drop-offs and pick-ups was, at times, risking life.

"The greatest problem was the speed at which on-coming traffic was travelling and the hazards involved in reducing speed in a hurry to allow cars and pedestrians to safely enter and exit the school. I expect the new signage and enforcement of the 50km/h speed limit will make for a safer school at Coldwood."

Senator Healy Eames also welcomed the proposed speed limit reduction to 50km/h at New Estate, Clarinbridge and the extension of the 50km/h speed limit on the Maree Road to the entrance to Renville Park in Oranmore.
