With a new academic year dawning and thousands of students returning from the comfort of home to the mayhem of college life, NUI, Galway’s students have a new leader to fight their corner. James Hope follows in the footsteps of Pat Rabbitte and Eamon Gilmore as the newly elected President of NUI, Galway Students’ Union, representing over 13,000 students.
James says his main priority is to improve communication between the students and their union. An Arts under-graduate, James spent several years running his own business before returning to third level education in NUIG. A member of the Literary and Debating, Political Discussion and the History and Philosophy Society, he also held the position of Chair of the Young Greens on campus for two years, one of several new student representatives nationally who is involved in environmental politics. James will be responsible for co-ordinating the activities of the Students' Union and working with university management to achieve the best academic environment and quality of life for students attending NUIG. He will co-ordinate the Students' Union campaigns during the year and act as chief spokesperson. James will also oversee the commercial services of the Union, including the College Bar, Smokey Joe's and Campus shop.
James will be joined by two other full time officers, Elizabeth Mulry as Welfare Officer and Ciara Staunton as Education Officer, and six part time officers for the upcoming 2007/8 academic year. |
