A clampdown on hospital visits has been put in place at Portiuncula hospital following an outbreak of the gastrointestinal illness, known as the winter vomiting bug.

As a result of the outbreak, precautionary measures have been put in place, with one ward closed to further admissions. It is believed that the illness may be due to a viral infection.

An outbreak control committee has been formed and hospital management and staff have put in place measures to reduce the possible risk of the virus spreading to other patients and to other areas and departments within Portiuncula Hospital. The HSE is requesting the co-operation of the general public in preventing the spread of this infection.

Friends and family have been encouraged not to visit the hospital unless it is essential. Visitors are also being asked not to unnecessarily call to other parts of the hospital to try and curtail the spread of the infection.

People who have experienced recent illness are also asked not to visit the hospital, as are very young children as they may be particularly susceptible to the virus. If visiting Portiuncula hospital, people are urged to wash their hands thoroughly before leaving the inpatient area or after a visit to the toilet.

Meanwhile, members of the public with symptoms of viral gastroenteritis are advised not to present to their accident and emergency department but to contact their GP instead.
