"The Irish escort industry has been driven underground for a long time and this has allowed criminal elements to thrive within it. We think it is time Ireland adopted a friendlier attitude to escorting as just another service industry and started supporting escorts," she concluded.

Geraldine Rowley of prostitution support group Ruhama echoed Ms Albright's feelings. "Violence is a very real part of prostitution in Ireland and a number of women in prostitution have been murdered in this country in the last few years.

"We are concerned, from our 20 years experience in Ireland, that prostitution is moving more 'off-street' and is now more controlled by criminals."

While reports detailed that Brenda had contacted Gardaí after the incident, Superintendent Tom Curley of Mill Street said they were investigating an attack on a female in a Galway hotel room but could not confirm she was an escort.
