Galway City Museum is to play the 'what if' in life with the commencement of a counterfactual history series on Thursday 17 January at 8pm.

In the first of this series, Dr John Cunningham, NUIG, surmises what course Irish history could have taken had De Valera been shot in the Civil War and had Michael Collins survived.

The reversal of fate would have had huge implications for Irish history - imagine Ireland without Fianna Fáil! Would the Irish constitution have been radically different? Would Ireland have remained neutral during the Second World War?

Dr Cunningham will talk for the best part of an hour, combing through various events in Irish history and giving the alternative scenario. After this talk the discussion will be open to the floor for questions or alternative scenarios. Tea and coffee will be served free of charge.

The second 'What If' lecture will be delivered by the American lecturer, Quincy Lehr, who will answer the question 'What if the US mainland was bombed in WWII'? This debate will take place on Thursday 24 January, at 8pm.

Tickets, €5, are available on the door only. For further information, contact the museum at 091-532460.
