Over 1,200 children from 17 schools across the county have been recognised for their participation in 'Scríobh Leabhar,' a project encouraging primary school children to compose, design and publish their own books in Irish.

Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, éamon Ó Cuív TD was guest of honour at the event and presented certificates to the 176 schools at a ceremony held in the Ardilaun Hotel, Galway recently.

The 'Scríobh Leabhar' scheme is managed through Galway Educational Centre in conjunction with Bord na Leabhar Gaeilge and An Chomhairle um Oideachas Gaeltachta agus Gaelscolaíochta. Seven Education centres are involved in the scheme this year and over 8,000 children in over 100 schools nationwide took part in the scheme.

In order for children to be equipped with the appropriate learning tools for their journey as an Irish language author and publisher, teachers are offered an in-service course which helps them devise strategies to motivate and inspire children's Irish language writing.

The participating schools swap books so that children have the opportunity to read and discuss material written by their counterparts. The scheme also allows children to present their work to a real audience, rather than just teachers, parents and classmates.

The schools recognised for their efforts were Gaelscoil Iarfhlatha, Tuaim, Naomh Bríde, Muighras, Gaelscoil Mhic Amhlaigh, Cnoc na Cathrach, Scoil Sailerna Indreabhán, Scoil Iognáid Galway, Scoil Chaomhaain, Inis Oirr, S.N Naomh Treasa, An Caiseal, S.N Inis Meáin, Oileáin árann, Gaelscoil De hÍde, Scoil Mhuire, An Tuairín, S.N Leitir Meallaain, Leitir Meallaain, S.N Thir an Fhia, Scoil Naisiúnta an Droma Leitir Móir, S.N Cearn Mór, Uarán Mór, S.N Mhuire, Maigh Cuilinn, Scoil Bhríde, Leitir Calaidh and Scoil Mhic Dara, An Cheathrú Rua.
