Sunday 15 June is European Wind Day and to mark the occasion the wind farm at Sonnagh Old, outside Loughrea will be open to the public from 1pm to 6pm with free tours and talks on how it works. Sonnagh Old Wind Farm, which is owned and operated by Corr na Gaoithe Teoranta, is home to nine turbines. It is located approximately seven miles from Loughrea on the N66 road to Gort. Free parking will be available adjacent to the farm which began production in 2004 and has a capacity of 7.65 MW. The story of the turbines and how wind energy can reduce our dependence on ever more expensive fossil fuels such as oil is a story of interest to young and old. The open day will provide an opportunity to learn more about wind energy and to support one of the main solutions to the looming climate and energy crisis. European Wind Day 2008 will also offer visitors to the turbine information on how much wind energy can deliver to Ireland and Europe, and many fascinating facts about this clean and infinite source of energy. Wind power currently provides approximately seven per cent of Ireland's electricity supply but has the potential to provide 42 per cent by 2020. European Wind Day is organised by the European Wind Energy Association and supported in Ireland by the Irish Wind Energy Association, the national association for the wind industry in Ireland. |
