Ceannt Station at Eyre Square Galway has become the first bus and rail station in the West of Ireland to install an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and have staff trained in its use.

A total of 15 staff members from Bus Eireann and Iarnrod Eireann have volunteered for training and are now qualified to use the defibrillator in cases of Sudden Cardiac Arrest. The training was provided by Emer Burke, the Croí Lifeline Project Co-ordinator.

Speaking at the installation of the AED on the platform at Ceannt Station, Galway, Ms Burke said, "Ceannt Station and the staff of Bus Eireann and Iarnrod Eireann are to be commended for taking this initiative. The staff who voluntarily stepped forward to be trained, are to be congratulated for showing such good community spirit. Hopefully the defibrillator will never have to be used, but having one readily available in cases of cardiac emergency, could literally mean the difference between life and death.

Research shows that trained lay people with access to a defibrillator having witnessed a cardiac arrest and being able to respond within minutes, can significantly enhance survival outcomes. Studies have shown that survival rates of up to 40 per cent and higher have been achieved in these circumstances."

Ms Burke said Croí is committed to promoting the widespread availability of defibrillators such that in time their availability and use will help increase the out-of-hospital survival rate from cardiac arrest, which currently is as low as one per cent.
