The site at Ceannt Station must be used as the hub for a regional and integrated public transport system if Galway’s traffic problems are to be solved.
That’s according to Michael D Higgins TD and general election candidate for Galway West, who has expressed his disappointment that the matter had not been put up for public discussion. “Rather, in an extraordinary way, CIE began with the site and even though they are the national transport company, the future transport needs were not a matter of public discussion.” Mr Higgins said the welfare of Galway City and its surrounding towns and villages are inextricably linked and any true regional development must respect this principle.“The uncontrolled expansion of the city at the cost of the region would be a recipe for rural neglect on the one hand, and on the other, a guarantee of urban congestion. “Good reliable integrated regional transport means planning for rail, bus, road and all modes of transport including cyclists, pedestrians and those with special needs within the same framework. It also means there would be a fully integrated ticketing system in which one ticket could be used across the various means of transport,” he said. Planning permission will now be sought by CIE for the 14 -acre site at Ceannt station and in the intervening period Michael D Higgins said that the onus will now be on the local authorities and the public to ensure that the opportunity to develop a regional hub for public transport will not be lost. |
