Tuam town centre is to get a state-of-the-art CCTV system to protect the town's amenities.

The decision, made at a County Council meeting on Monday, will mean an investment of approximately €500,000.

The proposal is at the last stage of planning and the project is expected to begin soon. The proposal came from a number of sources as a result of concerns in the local community, according to Councillor Colm Keaveney.

Speaking yesterday about the CCTV system, he said: "It will be a crime deterrent, but it will also protect many amenities from vandalism. Protection of the Palace grounds park and the playground there is important and will allow the council to proceed with development of further amenities."
