University College Hospital Galway (UCHG) has become the first hospital in Ireland to perform a curative cancer treatment.
A team of specialists at UCHG carried out brachytherapy procedures on two patients who were suffering from early-stage prostate cancer.

Derived from ancient Greek words for short distance (brachy) and treatment (therapy), it is usually an outpatient procedure so the patients don't have to be admitted to or stay in the hospital. The individuals in Galway had the treatment on a Friday and were back to work on the Monday after the weekend.

Prostate cancer, cervical cancer, endometrial cancer, and coronary artery disease can be treated with brachytherapy and in some cases it can be a suitable alternative to surgical removal of the prostate, breast, and cervix.

Galway West Deputy Noel Grealish said, "Cancer patients should not have to make the 300-mile round trip to Dublin for treatment and I have been working with Mary Harney, the Minister for Health and Children, to ensure services in the West rival those in the East," he said.

"I will continue working with the Minister to ensure cancer care in the West is brought to a first-class standard," he added.
