Galway residents have been asked to bin their gum in an effort to clean up the city.

A nationwide 'Gum Litter Action Campaign' has been launched and will involve outdoor advertising, in-store and around store advertising, point of sale materials, as well as the promotion of greater awareness of litter law enforcement through higher visibility of litter fines for irresponsible disposal of gum in the local authority areas throughout the country.

The campaign, which will run for a year starting this month, represents the centrepiece of the programme of activity of the Gum Litter Taskforce, which was established in 2006 as a joint initiative between the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government and the gum industry as represented by the Food and Drink Industry Ireland (FDII) a business sector of IBEC.

Fifteen local authorities have been selected to take part in the first phase of the nationwide campaign, which will be rolled out nationally over the next two years. The campaign theme is 'Thanks for binning your gum when you're done' and is modelled on three highly successful pilot programmes run last year in Dublin and Cork city centres and Bray town.

Commenting on the start of the nationwide campaign in Galway, Paul Kelly, Chairman of the Gum Litter Taskforce, said, "We all recognise that gum litter is a serious problem and we want to tackle it in the most effective way. The most effective way to influence people's behaviour in relation to gum litter disposal is through a combination of encouragement and deterrent, carrot and stick if you like. The success of the three pilot campaigns proves that this works."
