A call has been made to name part of the Arás Naofa Community and Funeral Facilities in Renmore after the late city councillor Michael Leahy following a decision by the city council this week to approve a once off grant of €100,000 to the facility.

The call was made by Councillor Brian Walsh at this week’s meeting of the city council. He made the call “given Cllr Leahy’s involvement in the establishment of the community facility”.

Cllr Mary Leahy, who was co-opted onto the council to take her father’s seat, has welcomed the funding. She told council members the support she received through the Arás Naofa community service at the time of her father’s funeral was “invaluable”.

“On a personal level, it was both ironic and very fitting that the funeral of my late father, Cllr. Michael Leahy, RIP, was one of the first to be held in the facility,” said Cllr Leahy,

“I am very proud to say that my late father was one of the main forces in bringing Arás Naofa to fruition. He worked tirelessly on the project. I cannot compliment the committee and the facility enough for the excellent and unique service that is available.

“Arás Naofa reinforces a sense to the bereaved of the support provided by and within their own community at a very difficult time in life. My family and I can provide personal testament of this support. It was invaluable.”

The once off capital contribution of €100,000 will offset the monies owing against the outstanding debt of the Arás Naofa Community Buildings. This money is being made available from development contribution levies and is subject to the community use of the building.

Meanwhile, around 50 people participated in the memorial walk on Sunday in memory of the late Michael Leahy. They joined hundreds of walkers who raised vital funding for the Galway Hospice. Cllr Mary Leahy has expressed her thanks to all those who supported her and took the time out to remember her Dad and all the people who had gone before.
