The victims of a plane crash, which happened 100 miles off the Galway coast in 1958, should be commemorated in the city, according to City Councillor John Mulholland. The KLM flight travelling from Shannon to Canada crashed off the Galway coast killing all 101 people on board.
Cllr Mulholland said: “A huge emergency operation was put out by the entire city of Galway to recover the bodies of the crash victims. The city was commended for the way it responded which was above and beyond the call of duty. Those involved knew it was a difficult situation as all passengers were lost in the crash. Everyone in Galway and the Claddagh helped enormously. They responded immediately to the disaster.”
Councillor Mulholland is calling for a cross-denominational memorial service to be held in the city and will put the motion before the city council next month. He said he hoped the relations of the victims will return to the city for the event to “let them know they are not forgotten.”
