"I support Fine Gael's Health spokesperson, Dr James Reilly's call on the Minister to stop 'rail-roading' through change for the sake of political expediency and ensure all the additional resources required to give a safe service are put in place before any further transfers occur so that patient confidence can be restored." The HSE told the Galway Independent that the appointment of additional consultant, nursing, radiography and administrative staff has been approved. "In addition staff with special expertise in MGH can provide part of their service in UHG as part of the UHG breast team. Adequate day and inpatient beds will be made available; approximately one to two beds will be required for this purpose. Dedicated space is available within the purpose-built Symptomatic Breast Clinic to accommodate patients and a significant theatre development is under way. These resources and facilities have been agreed as the basis for ensuring that patients receive access to the best possible care on referral to the dedicated centre at UHG," said the spokesperson. From the outset, the National Cancer Control Programme has stated that no services would transfer from existing centres to the designated centres until the necessary resources were in place. |
