Safety measures to deal with the on-going traffic hazards that exist at Oranmore BNS must be put in place before the beginning of the new school year if further accidents in the area are to be avoided.

That's according to Fine Gael Galway West Senator, Fidelma Healy Eames, who has recently written to the county manager expressing her deep concern for the safety of children attending Oranmore BNS.

"The footpath in front and leading up to the school is in dire need of a protective railing, which would help to ensure that students can walk safely along the path. Recently two boys were hit by passing traffic at this location, with one of the boys having to be hospitalised following the incident.

"Over the years, I have brought the issue of road hazards at this location and the implications for the lives and safety of pupils attending Oranmore BNS to the attention of the local authority office at Lackagh but to date no satisfactory solution to the problem has been found.

"The matter has now come to a head. The school, the parent body and the local community are horrified at the on-going dangers that exist in the area. Local gardaí are well aware of the situation and it is the view of Oranmore BNS's Board of Management and the Parents' Association that new safety measures must be provided before the beginning of the new school year on 1 September if further accidents are to be prevented.

"Having researched into similar situations at other schools, I was delighted to learn that the protective railing outside the Claddagh NS in Galway City was provided by Galway City Council at the request of the Principal and the local community. I hope that the same respect and protection can be afforded to the pupils and parents at Oranmore."
