Galway councillors have called for more frequent meetings with planning authorities in order to alleviate difficulties with local applications.

Oranmore councillor Jim Cuddy had led the calls, asking County Manager Martina Moloney to implement a procedure whereby local councillors can meet with the planners for their respective local authority area on a monthly basis.

"A monthly meeting with planners will afford local councillors the opportunity to discuss planning applications with planners and inform constituents about issues of concern. It is my understanding that this procedure is already in place in other counties," he said.

Cllr Cuddy said such a system would enable the councillors to discuss any problems with planning applications and help to alleviate the difficulties and delays that some applicants experience when they apply for planning permission.

"I plan to discuss this proposal with the county manager in the coming weeks and I am hopeful that such a process can be put in place in the short term," he said.
