All ESB cables in the city could be underground by 2013, if a motion by city councillor Niall O Brolcháin gets the go-ahead from Galway City Council. Green Party councillor O Brolcháin is calling for a five-year plan to be put in place by the city council and the ESB to put all electricity cables in residential and amenity areas of the city underground. The call was made in light of the multi-million euro project to upgrade the ESB facility in the Westside to 110kv, serving the western suburbs of Galway City and Connemara. Cllr O Brolcháin has put the motion before Galway City Council and is hopeful that it could be a viable prospect for the future of the city. "I am delighted to finally see many of the ugly pylons and overhead wires being removed from the Westside at the moment and replaced with underground cables. However, there is a clear need to phase out all remaining overhead cables from residential and amenity areas in Galway City. "I managed to get a provision included in the City Development Plan requiring the under grounding of cables where possible. When the new 110kv station is in place it will be possible in all parts of the city. I don't believe that any new wires should now be put in place over ground, in particular the ones planned for Cappagh Park to the West of Galway City." |
