An Bord Snip's recommendations amount to no more than Facist practices targeting the vulnerable in society. That is the opinion of a local Labour councillor, who is calling on the government to come up with progressive alternatives to what he calls a "senseless programme of cutbacks". In a stinging attack on the Bord's proposals, Cllr Niall McNelis said, "Now more than ever, progressive forces need to unite against right-wing attacks on public services and on our vulnerable citizens, the old, the young and the sick. He said young workers and students would be hit particularly hard by the social welfare, health and education cuts, with a government job creation package still nowhere to be seen. Cllr McNelis is calling on the government to nationalise banks and resist implementing cutbacks in the education system and reducing social welfare payments. "It is clear that as a country we cannot cut our way out of this depression. This Fianna Fail Government is wedded to the outdated neo-liberal model of slash and burn." He called for the government partners, The Green Party, to jump ship and join Labour in promoting a left-wing social agenda. . |
