Galway Gardaí have vowed to strictly enforce the city's by-law that forbids street drinking as they take to the street in huge numbers today. As part of this strategic plan for St Patrick's Day, Gardaí will have a "substantial number of extra members on duty". A spokesperson for Mill Street Gardai confirmed to the Galway Independent that they will be strictly applying the letter of the law today. "The Galway City by-law prohibiting drinking in the streets will be strictly enforced on St Patrick's Day. Also, the area around the Spanish Arch will specifically be targeted. Drinking in public will just not be allowed to happen. "It is a busy day for us, but if the weather is good it tends to be busier. Oranmore also have a parade taking place and they'll need some additional help as they don't have sufficient numbers. Hopefully everybody will behave themselves, but we will be using all the resources available to us," he concluded. The parade in Galway city, which has a theme of ‘Over the Moon' will start at 12.30pm from Dominic Street and will follow the route across O'Brien's Bridge, up Shop Street to its conclusion at the viewing stand at the top of Eyre Square. |
