A man’s body was recovered from the sea near Killary Harbour on Monday afternoon. The man, who was diving when he got into difficulty, has been named locally as Gabriel ‘Texas’ Ryan.

The 42-year-old was originally from the Tuam area but had been living in the UK for 20 years. Gabriel disappeared on Sunday while diving with two other companions in a fjord in Connemara. His body was later discovered on Monday afternoon in 30m of water close to the area where he went missing. The remains were then removed to UCHG where a post mortem examination was to take place.

Coastguard rescue teams, lifeboats and members of the Garda diving unit all took part in the search for the deceased. Gardaí are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.
