The body of a man has been recovered from a waterway near Newtownsmith.

According to Superintendent Tom Curley of Mill Street Station, the man had earlier gone missing and a search was underway in the city when the body was discovered at approximately 4.30pm.

The circumstances surrounding the man's death are not known.

In the aftermath of this tragic death, Irish Water Safety CEO John Leech has warned people to be extra careful around the city waterways during the dark winter months.

"The aquatic environment is not our environment; we need to respect it. Be careful, especially in the dark winter evenings. People in the city need to be vigilant about the risks posed by the rivers and the canals so that these tragic events don't happen," he said.
