The safety of Inis Oirr pier will be improved after An Bord Pleanala gave the go-ahead for a new extension.

The current pier was found to be too small for the island's needs, as well as being unsafe due to overtopping of waves.

The proposal covers a pier extension, breakwater, dredging of the navigation channel and new floodlighting and services at Inis Oirr Harbour.

The new pier extension will be 30 metres long and 10 metres wide, with a 60 metre long angled extension which is 15 metres wide, and made of pre-cast concrete cassion units filled with reinforced concrete.

The current pier at Inis Oirr was found to be very congested, and not sufficient to serve the needs of island ferries and other vessels.

Submissions on the proposal were made to An Bord Pleanala by the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural resources, and the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government.
