Despite a plea from Minister Éamon Ó Cúiv to halt development in the area until infrastructure is in place, the county council voted on Monday to go ahead with an amended version of the Barna Development Plan.

Concerns that the area does not have sufficient infrastructure for its mounting population were raised by Minister O Cúiv in a newspaper article written last week, while Independent County Councillor Seosamh O Cuaig raised the issue at the meeting.

Cllr O Cuaig, who represents the Conamara Electoral Area, proposed delaying implementation of the plan until it could be guaranteed that land would be available for community amenities. This was seconded by Cllr Dermot Connolly of Sinn Féin. The motion was supported by Cllr Colm Keaveney (formerly of Labour) and Fianna Fáil Cllr Sean O Tuairisc, but met defeat after a long debate, during which opposed members criticised Minister O Cúiv for “playing to the gallery” and not making a formal submission.

However, speaking to the Galway Independent yesterday, Cllr O Cuaig pointed out that the Development Plan had “made a lot of progress compared to what was looming two and a half years ago.” When he was elected, he said, “there was a danger that Barna would be turned into a monstrosity, with high rise apartments down to the water’s edge, but that thankfully isn’t what has happened.”
