Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe has been named the best maternity hospital in Ireland, according to health website www.irishhealth.com. Mothers voting on a Rate My Hospital poll said that the hospital provided the best maternity services in the country, with a grade of 81 per cent. The Galway hospital faced stiff competition to the title, narrowly beating South Tipperary General and Dublin's Rotunda hospital who finished in second and third place respectably. University Hospital Galway only managed to reach 17th place on the league table, with 58 per cent. Surprisingly, two of Ireland's most recognisable maternity hospitals, Holles Street and The Coombe, also failed to make the top ten. The Rate my Hospital maternity statistics are based on almost 9,200 fully completed 23-part online patient surveys taken over the last 12 months. A spokesperson for the Maternity Unit at Portiuncula Hospital said they were thrilled with the news. "Portiuncula Hospital is delighted with this vote of confidence. The Maternity Department has a good ethos of teamwork with excellent communication with other departments within the hospital that support the unit. There are a number of plans to develop the maternity services at Portiuncula Hospital, which include early pregnancy unit, colposcopy services, urodynamics and urogynaecology. In 2006, there were 1,853 babies born and we anticipate that the number will be in excess of 2,000 for 2007." |
