Almost 600 guests attended the ball, held on Saturday 16 February in the Radisson SAS Hotel, Galway.

Helen Boles, Chairperson of the National Maritime Ball Committee said, “The National Maritime Ball Committee would like to thank all of the sponsors, and those who attended the Maritime Ball for their support. A special thank you is also accredited to Mr John Curley, of Curley’s Furniture, who has been the main sponsor for two years running. The 2008 ball was a huge success where guests were entertained by local band Pyramid, tenor Frank Naughton and TG4 personality Síle Seoige as MC.”

Brian Niland, member of the lifeboat crew and the National Maritime Ball Committee commented, “It costs €130,000 annually to ensure that the RNLI crew members receive the best possible training and that the boat and station are maintained so the crew can continue saving lives on Galway Bay. The funds raised by the Maritime Ball will go a long way in achieving this.”

The annual Maritime Person of the Year Award (Frank W. Sheridan Memorial Award) was presented to Mr Tom MacSweeney, RTE’s Marine Correspondent and presenter of Seascapes for his lifetime contribution in raising awareness of the importance of maritime life to Ireland as a nation. Mr MacSweeney will feature in next week’s Galway Independent ‘Me and the Sea’ interview.
