A 36-year-old man who has been diagnosed with Tuberculosis has been remanded on continuing bail following his brief appearance before Galway District Court last Wednesday. The man’s case was called first on the list so that he would not have to stay long in the packed courtroom. Judge Mary Fahy explained that the man had a particular medical condition, which is not conducive to him being present in a large crowd of people. She said she would deal with his case first, as there was a large crowd present in the courtroom. The man was first brought before the court last week and on that occasion the court convened half an hour earlier than usual in an empty courtroom due to the contagious disease. The man faces charges of being drunk in public and of refusing to leave the area of the Fairgreen Hostel when directed to do so by a Garda on 15 October. He also faces charges of being drunk in public, breaching the peace and with failing to leave the Quay Street area of the city when directed to do so by a Garda on 25 May last year. Judge Mary Fahy remanded the man on continuing bail to appear before the court again on 14 January. Bail was granted on condition he reside at the Fairgreen Hostel and remain sober in the interim. |
