The 31st Galway Arts Festival got underway on Monday night with various gigs, plays and exhibitions opening throughout the city.

One of the musical highlights of the festival so far has been Alabama 3 who played at the Róisín Dubh on Monday night.

With many of the high-profile acts sold out, including Damien Dempsey, Better Late, Des Bishop, Druid's The New Electric Ballroom and Lisa Hannigan, this year's festival has already taken flight.

Some of the festival's highlights this week will include; in theatre Penguins at Tara Restaurant, The New Electric Ballroom, Waiting for Elvis; in dance Malora and Tania Perez Salas; and in music Cathy Davey and Sam Issac.

The festival will run until Sunday 27 July and tickets are still available from www.galwayartsfestival.com.
