The Chairman of Galway Arts Centre, David Niland, has announced that Tomás Hardiman, who has served as Managing Director for the past five years, will be resigning from his post effective from October 31.

Mr Hardiman, who has more than 20 years experience of arts and culture management is leaving Galway Arts Centre to establish an independent company. One of his first assignments will be to manage a major international conference on the arts for children for Baboró International Arts Festival for Children. The conference is the first of its kind in Ireland, and will focus on the provision of quality arts programming for children in Ireland today and will take place in Galway in October 2008.

Accepting the resignation with regret, David Niland paid tribute to Hardiman for effectively overseeing multiple projects at the Galway Arts Centre, including the refurbishment of Nuns Island, the establishment of an arts programme in UCHG, the consolidation and growth of Cúirt International Festival of Literature, Galway Youth Theatre and Tulca Season of Visual Arts and the expansion of GAC activities in Galway city and county. He said: “We thank Tomás Hardiman for his significant contribution and wish him well in his ongoing career.”

Tomás Hardiman said he had hugely enjoyed his five years with the Galway Arts Centre and attributed the success of the centre to the singular talents and commitment of the board and staff . He also thanked all the artists in the many art forms with whom he had the pleasure to be associated.

“I feel privileged to have been able to work with all of them in the advancement of the Galway Arts Centre’s mission over the past five years. I am also indebted to the many patrons and generous supporters of the centre’s work. The wellbeing of Galway Arts Centre will continue to have a special importance for me,” said Mr Hardiman.

The recruitment process for Mr Hardiman’s replacement will begin shortly.
