An apprentice block layer who was convicted of drink driving at Galway District Court on Monday told the court he was ‘ashamed’ of himself for committing the offence.

Defence solicitor Olivia Traynor told the court that 20-year-old Brendan Brennan apologised to the court for driving without lights along College Road on 6 May at 2.20am, while extremely intoxicated. She added that Mr Brennan had never been in trouble before and was aware that he would be disqualified.

When breathalysed by Garda Ciara Moran, Mr Brennan was found to be more than twice the legal limit.

Mr Brennan, an apprentice block layer who resides at Flaskaghmore, Dunmore, Galway, was convicted and fined €450, with three months to pay and seven days in default. Judge Denis McLoughlin also disqualified him from driving for three years.
