Anti-Lisbon group Libertas has rubbished speculation that Eurovision winner, former MEP Dana Scallon is to join forces with the group, by running as a candidate for the party in the European elections. ![]() Dana Scallon. It was revealed in June that Libertas, led by Galway businessman Declan Ganley, plan to run up to 100 candidates in the European elections in 2009 as a "proxy referendum" on the controversial treaty. With rumours abounding that Dana is set to make her return to politics, there has been strong speculation that she may join the party due to her outspoken opposition to the treaty. Dana was previously elected as an MEP in 1999 and held the position until 2004, when she claimed 13.5 per cent of the vote. Speaking to the Galway Independent, Dana refused to confirm or deny whether she would be contesting the election or discuss her connection to the Libertas group. "At the moment I am not making any comment on the European elections but I will say that I do feel that there is a lack of representation in Europe for the people who voted against the Lisbon Treaty. There needs to be a better group of people campaigning for their views and that would be a concern of mine." However, Naoise Nunn of Libertas has dismissed the rumours as "nonsense", saying the group has not been in touch with the Galway-based singer, who lives close to Ganley's home in Abbeyknockmoy. |
