Heritage group An Taisce has joined the growing chorus against the development of the historic Lenaboy Castle/St Anne's site.

In a letter of appeal to An Bord Pleanála seen by the Galway Independent, the organisation cites numerous objections to the plan by concerned residents and groups and condemns Galway City Council's decision to grant planning permission.

The organisation cites An Bord Pleanála's refusal to grant planning permission for a similar development in 2002, saying it sees "no change" to the circumstances that prevailed on that occasion.

The letter describes the site at St Anne's as "very sensitive", saying the development will "completely dominate this extraordinary location" and will cause "all sorts of mayhem for traffic in the vicinity".

The objection follows Galway City Council's undertaking last week to investigate "acquiring" the St Anne's site, despite the advanced nature of the Mercy Sisters' plans to develop it.
