All systems are go for the Galway Races, with the latest announcement that seven English runners will take part in the prestigious William Hill Galway Plate on Wednesday 1 August.

‘Yes Sir’, a well-known horse from leading trainer Peter Bowen’s yard and ‘Hoola Boola’ with trainer Paul Nicholls, will head the English field for the 2m 6f race. Meanwhile, four English horses will partake in Thursday’s Galway Hurdle with French trainer, Francois Doumen also entering ‘Sunrise Spirit’. 

The official going at the moment is soft with sun, showers, and high winds forecasted for the next few days. Race goers are advised to turn up early to all days racing to avoid traffic delays. Monday, Tuesday and Friday will be evening meetings, beginning at 5.10pm, racing on Wednesday and Thursday will commence at 1.50pm while Saturday and Sunday will kick off a 2.15pm.

The irrepressible Hector Ó hEochagáin, star of RTE’s ‘Only Fools Buy Horses’, will return this year to host the big bash in the Guinness and Oyster Marquee on the first day of racing on Monday 30 July. An evening of fun, laughter and general hilarity is guaranteed, with a host of spot prizes.

The Best Dressed Lady competition takes place on what is traditionally known as Ladies Day, on Thursday 2 August. The winner of the Best Dressed Lady will receive a lavish first prize of a €4,000 shopping spree at Anthony Ryan’s along with a specially commissioned trophy by sculpture Donnacha Cahill. There will also be a runner up prize. The prize for the Best Hat is sponsored by The Ardilaun Hotel and will be a Luxury Trip to the USA for Two to include Return Flights to Boston from Ireland West Knock Airport and three nights accommodation in the luxurious four star Jury's Boston Hotel, which is located downtown in Boston.

Mad Hatter Day on Sunday 5 August is sponsored by the Mercer Group and is touted as a day for ‘Alice in millinery funderland’. Patrons are urged to cast their sartorial inhibitions aside, give free rein to their imagination and wear the most bizarre, surreal and fantastical headgear they can conjure up. This competition will be judged on a large stage at the back of the Millennium Stand.

All eyes will be on the track to see who claims the Leading Jockey award, which has been sponsored by Rooney Life, and Pensions for over 25 years. For the first time this year, ii will also have a Qualified Riders Category. Chanelle Veterinary will again sponsor the Leading Trainer Award, while the prize for the best turned out horse in each of the 51 races will be donated by Paddy Power Bookmaker.
