All the patients affected by the latest investigation into pathology services at University Hospital Galway (UHG) have now been contacted, according to a spokesperson for the hospital.

It was revealed last week that the work of a third pathologist at the hospital is being investigated. The pathologist worked at UHG for a short period in early 2004 and has been suspended from the medical register in the UK for 18 months after concerns about his work there.

The hospital spokesperson said that the welfare of the patients is UHG's first priority and further details about the review will not be released until the process with the patients is completed.

A definitive date for completion cannot yet be announced, but the spokesperson said the hospital hopes to complete the review "as quickly as possible".
