The Castlebar campus at Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology has received an academic windfall in the shape of the entire personal library and papers of distinguished theologian Reverend Professor Enda McDonagh.

The college will hold a one-day conference in honour of Professor McDonagh, in association with the Western Theological Institute.

Dr. McDonagh, who is now retired but was previously a Professor of Moral Theology at NUI, Maynooth, is originally from Bekan, Co. Mayo. An internationally recognised moral theologian, he has a distinguished publication record at home and abroad. He has written and edited numerous collections, several dealing with the theme of political violence, and has also been involved with the cause of political recognition in Ireland, South Africa and Zimbabwe.

Mr Bernard O’Hara, GMIT Registrar, was delighted with the gift, saying; “Dr McDonagh’s library is one of the best theological libraries in Ireland. It also reflects his broad inter-disciplinary interests in philosophy, ethics, politics, ecology, art, poetry and drama.

His library reflects the extent of his global interests from the problems of Latin America, the political challenge of Zimbabwe, HIV/Aids in Africa, to his concern for the marginalised worldwide. It is a most important collection and GMIT is delighted that Dr. Mc Donagh is donating the library to the third-level institution in his native county,” added Mr O’Hara.

Among the guest speakers at the day-long conference in Professor McDonagh’s honour, which will take place in the autumn, are former Taoiseach Dr Garret FitzGerald and Focus Ireland founder Sister Stanislaus Kennedy.  The conference titled “Of Beauty, Love and Truth, takes place in the McWilliam Park Hotel, Claremorris, Co Mayo, on Saturday, 13 October 2007.
