Local Deputy, Pádraic McCormack has made a fresh appeal over the plight of an 80-year-old Connemara woman who has had her home help service cut in half by the Health Service Executive.

Local Deputy, Pádraic McCormack has made a fresh appeal over the plight of an 80-year-old Connemara woman who has had her home help service cut in half by the Health Service Executive. The woman, who is living in her own home, has had her home help cut from eight hours per week to just four hours per week due an embargo on HSE staff. As a result, she may be forced to go to a nursing home.

“Up until July this year, this family had eight hours of home help per week for their aged mother who lives in her own home. However, one of the home-helpers retired and now their home help hours have been reduced to four hours. They can’t get the remaining four hours restored because of cutbacks,” said Deputy McCormack.

“When I contacted the HSE Home Help personnel about this, I was informed that the four hours could not be restored because of the embargo on the recruitment of staff.  This is putting a serious strain on the family of this elderly person, who could continue to live in her own home with eight hours home help. They fear their mother will have to go in to a nursing home,” he said.

According to Deputy McCormack, the HSE has taken no further action to replace this family with fours hours home help. He said it would cost the HSE less than €50 per week. He said he has spoken and written to the HSE West on this problem but to date has not received any reply.
