The helpline set up in the wake of the revelation that diagnostic errors took place at the Pathology Laboratory at the University College Hospital Galway (UCHG) has had 64 calls to date, the Health Services Executive West (HSE West) has revealed. The helpline was established last week in the wake of concerns about tests carried out at the hospital following the case of a 51-year-old woman with breast cancers whose tests were analysed incorrectly.

The HSE West invited any person with worries or concerns to contact the helpline for information and support. The number is 1800 25 20 16 and is operational between 9am and 5pm.

Meanwhile, the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) has indicated that it will be publishing the terms of reference of its inquiry into the review of pathology tests at UCHG in the coming weeks. The investigation team is currently being assembled and is expected to take the form of the team established to investigate the case of Rebecca O’Malley, whose tests were incorrectly analysed at Cork University Hospital earlier this year.

The hospital, through the HSE contacted the HIQA so that an independent systematic review into all the circumstances surrounding this case can take place. In the meantime, UCHG has initiated a look-back of other test results examined and reported at or about the time of the tests in question. The hospital said it is committed to publishing the findings arising from the review and to implement any recommendations necessary to minimise the risk of such an incident happening again.
