A canoe which is older than the Egyptian pyramids has gone on display in Galway where it was found six years ago.

The 5,500 year old canoe was discovered by a schoolteacher and his son on a beach near Barna. The dug-out canoe went on display on Sunday for the first time to mark World Ocean Day in the Atlantaquaria in Salthill.

Hundreds of people were enthralled by the ancient vessel, which has conserved for an underwater display in the aquarium.

The canoe, which is carved from pine, was discovered by school principal Brian Ó Carra and his son, Rónán at Turlin Bay near Barna in December 2002 following a huge storm. Mr Ó Carra had already discovered ancient tree trunks and deer antlers embedded in peat layers under the sand in the same area.

Massive storm waves had striped some of the peat which led to the discovery of ancient vessel.
