Drivers in Galway have received the fifth highest number of penalty points since their introduction in 2002. According to figures released this week, 15,886 Galway drivers received penalty points over the five-year period. This is the fifth highest tally in the country, behind Meath with 17,583, Kildare with 22,545, Cork with 39,375 and Dublin with a whopping 112,086 drivers. Despite the high number of drivers who obtained penalty points, the county has a relatively low number of people who reached the maximum of 12 points and were subsequently banned from driving. Only five drivers had their licenses revoked since 2002, less than Cork, Kildare, Wexford and Dublin. The most common reason for obtaining points was speeding, with 457,218 Irish drivers receiving points for this offence. |
