Infrastructure in Galway got a much-needed boost yesterday with the revelation that over €80 million of the €1.5 billion announced under the National Road Programme will be going to roads in and around the county.

In total, 673 individual projects will receive funding in the coming year.

Galway City is to receive €1.36 million for road upgrades, while the county is due to get €84.5 million.

The 22km Tuam to Galway N17 dual carriageway is in line to get funding of €1.5 million for its Compulsory Purchase Orders, while the 56km Galway to Ballinasloe Dual Carriageway, on which work is due to commence in 2007, will also receive funding, as will the Tuam bypass and Crusheen/Gort bypass.

Speaking yesterday, Minister for Transport, Martin Cullen said, "This Government is committed to progressing projects that will enhance quality of life for people, connect communities and underpin our prosperity. The funding allocated for 2007 will allow for more new and better roads that will help road-users go about their daily lives in a more efficient way. Better roads also facilitate greater competitiveness. Business can do business in a more effective way."
