A 26-year-old Newcastle man who gave a false name and address to Gardaí was fined €500 at Galway District Court this week. Aidan Greaney, 12 Inchaghoille Road, was convicted of the offence, which occurred at Mill Street, Galway on 14 January last. He was fined €100 for being intoxicated on the same occasion. The defendant pleaded guilty to the offences. The court heard that a taxi driver called to Mill Street Garda Station with a passenger who was refusing to pay his fare. The defendant was asleep and a Garda woke him up. When asked to give his name, he gave two false names before giving his correct name. The court heard that the fare was €14. When asked to account for his actions by Judge Fahy, Mr Greaney, a tiler said that he "got too drunk" and had taken a taxi from his house to a friend's house on the occasion. He had previous convictions for public orders offences and the unauthorised taking of a motor vehicle. Judge Fahy noted, "When you get your tiling done, don't you like to get paid, don't you think that the taxi driver likes to get paid for his work?" |
